Q.I want to get a roommate, but I am the only person on the lease, can I?

A.In most cases yes. However, if your lease says, "No subletting without the prior written permission of the landlord" or "No subletting at all" then you must get your landlord's written permission first. Local rent control ordinances may permit a tenant to have a roommate without such consent.
