Q.How do I transfer vehicles held in joint tenancy?

A.Either the Department of Motor Vehicles or the Automobile Club (AAA) will help you get the ownership certificate and the registration card to your vehicle reissued.

Take the following documents listed below to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for re-issuance:

  1. The ownership certificate signed by the surviving joint tenant;

  2. The vehicle registration card;

  3. A certificate of compliance with the smog-pollution control law (if the deceased joint tenant is not the grandparent, parent, sibling, child, grandchild, or spouse of the surviving joint tenant); and

  4. A certified copy of the death certificate for the deceased joint tenant.
